The light is directional, with a definite point of focus. From about 3 feet, it projects a very bright patch of light roughly 12 to 16 inches diameter. Light does spill outside of this focus area (180 degrees), but it's not as bright (similar to a flashlight with a bright core, then a dimmer area of surrounding light, except the surrounding area is much greater with this light).
